Bubble Bobble was first released as an arcade game back in 1986 and introduced the two little dinosaurs Bub and Bob as heroes attempting to rescue their girlfriends. After a series of sequels and spin-offs, the original is now once again available and makes its appearance on mobile.
This wireless version of Bubble Bobble is for one player only and therefore just features Bub as he attempts to rescue his beloved Betty with your help. Through 50 levels, Bub must defeat enemies by trapping them in bubbles and then jumping on them to burst for points. Players are also rewarded with fruit and other bonuses for added points.
Bub moves around the levels by walking on platforms, falling through an open space or jumping through platforms from below. With new enemies being introduced throughout the game, each one seemingly tougher than the previous, it becomes necessary to master the use of these items as well as the controls. Unfortunately for Bub, to be most effective requires the use of diagonal jumping which is only accomplished by using the keypad and this doesn’t feel quite natural. So, in this instance, you’re left choosing between a comfortable feel with lack of control (D-pad), or good control with fumbling mechanics (keypad).
One more drawback is that in order to maintain the original screen ratio of the arcade cabinet, the graphics have been shrunk down. The screen is bordered with a game cabinet image, which is a nice touch to give it an old-school look, but when the actual phone screen is already small and you further shrink all of the game’s illustrations, it makes it difficult to appreciate the action. The sound, however, is an excellent rendition of the original music that captures the catchy tune and brings back fond memories of playing the game at the arcade.
Bubble Bobble has always been a fun game to play but this wireless version requires a more concentrated effort both because of the controls and the tiny visuals. This might put a damper on the action for some of you but still, if you were hoping to have a version of the game on your handset, you’ve got the opportunity now.
