Centipede is back for the second time on mobile and while the first version was forgettable because of slowdown and bad controls, this new iteration of the classic hits the perfect note for anyone wanting to take the experience wireless.
At first glance, purists will be glad to know that the look and feel of the original game has been kept intact while improving performance so that the experience is equal to that of the arcade version. Most of the sounds are present and the controls, while still lacking a trackball, feel comfortable and respond well, so taking out the menacing centipede, fleas, mushrooms and scorpions is usually a piece of cake. That is of course if you are good at the game to begin with. But like most classic arcade games getting the mobile makeover nowadays, this new version also adds more to please the fans.
The first big feature introduced is that new themes have been added to update the appearance of the game if you’re tired of the classic look. No longer can you just play the game in its most recognizable form, but you have the option to choose from five different skins offered. They include Contempo, Robo, Aqua, Fire and Flower and the exact same game play is maintained, but audio, illustrations and backgrounds are changed to provide a fresh presentation. Classic and Contempo are offered immediately but the other four themes need to be unlocked by meeting certain criteria.
Apart from the Classic mode, a Power-Up mode has been included that allows you to play the game with new and exciting weapons. After selecting the theme of your choice, you can play the game with extra weapons. These additions really enhance the classic shooter in a great way. You can pick up lasers, bombs, three-way shots and shields, just to name a few. This elevates the game to a whole new level of fun because now there is a multitude of ways to fumigate those creepy insects.
Centipede doesn’t really change at all in game play but the new themes do make it feel like a completely different game each time and the power-ups really enhance the action. The current mobile trend to re-establish classics on wireless handsets by adding new features continues to pick up steam and this one here really kicks it into high gear. Centipede is a highly recommended download for anyone who is into the classics of video gaming on mobile.
