Chub City Test Yo Skills is a collection of mini-games based on the hot toy line property known as Chub City. Using favorites like J. Hustle, Hype, Castro and Trace, players will participate in four events around the neighborhood to see who is the hippest kid on the block.
With Castro, you skate and grind along rooftops collecting records, performing tricks and jumping across buildings. Skating is automatic while jumping is done with the action button. To perform one of four tricks, pressing one of the directions on the D-pad will get it done. It is essential to time the jump or tricks at the right time, or you’re in danger of falling off the building.
As Trace, you must collect cans of spray paint and tag the buildings for a more colorful neighborhood. This plays out about the same as the skating, that is moving and jumping, but the only dangers are items in the streets. To double jump and place a tag higher, fire hydrants can be used.
Hype and Chub C. find themselves in a rap battle and it’s your job to help them win. Essentially playing a game of Simon, you must correctly match a string of directions, but a Hype meter is also included that will rise based on how quickly you repeat the sequence. Once full, it gives you a useful power-up that will allow you to miss one sequence without losing the entire battle.
The last game available is Hoops and this one is played with J. Hustle. There are three moving backboards with varying distances and you must grab a ball, position the character, and shoot to make a basket. If your score is high enough, you can play an extra alley-oop game for more points. And that is what all of these games are played for, the highest points possible.
As you finish one round, the following ones become more demanding in order to keep playing. This makes for a constant challenge to your skills, but quite honestly, only two of the four games are totally fun. That would be Skating and Basketball. The others are forgettable. Still Chub City Test Yo Skills does a better job than other mini-game collections because these games have a completeness to them , and at least two will keep you coming back for more, unlike others.
