DOOM first introduced its apocalyptic vision of hell on Mars over 10 years ago. Since then, the gaming world has continuously been treated to an array of action, suspense and carnage by its creators, who now recently turned their attention to the newest gaming platform, mobile phones. They decided to create a brand new adventure and called it DOOM RPG. Yes, it’s still DOOM and yes, it’s one heck of a game.
DOOM RPG follows a new storyline in the DOOM universe but maintains the same basic premise: Hell’s demons are invading and you need to obliterate them. As a marine, you’ll encounter many familiar enemies and blow them away with your trusty assortment of shotguns, rocket launchers and special items throughout 10 levels of mayhem. Since it is an RPG however, it will have a slightly different feel than the normal manic-mouse controls.
First and foremost, the RPG element in this game isn’t really as deeply extravagant as you may fear. It serves more to provide better controls and smoother pacing because of it being on a wireless handset. The game is played entirely in a first-person perspective and the marine moves freely about the pathways. When an enemy moves into view, movement and the battle will become turn-based within that same confine. Once the battle is over, Experience Points are awarded to upgrade the marine’s skill levels and useful items may be dropped. You can then continue on your journey at a normal pace once again. Unless of course there are more demons to deal with.
Along the way, you will also come across scientists and other soldiers at the facility. You can speak with them and they’ll offer valuable advice, help move the story along or provide an unexpected twist. Using computer terminals is also an integral part of the game since they will unlock doors, provide restricted information or offer the purchase of extra equipment. In a great addition to the overall experience, there are many hidden chambers that you may come across for extra goodies, but you’ll have to pay extra attention to detail in order to find them all. You can always replay the level for a 100% completion and better player rating.
The game also features other elements that make it a blast to play. Aside from being able to wield an axe and chop demons close up, or carry a fire extinguisher to clear burning areas, you now have access to a mind control collar that will allow you to "commandeer" a canine demon and use it against other demons and as an extra shield. And when speaking to another character, or checking a computer terminal, you’ll come across not only some entertaining dialogue, but some well-placed inside jokes.
