Let’s see, where to begin with Fish ‘N Tunes? It’s a musical game where, as a fish, you follow a path of squid and bubbles to play notes that create melodies. You do this by chomping down on the path of squid and bubbles until you reach its end, at which time the full melody will begin playing. And, well, that’s about it. How’s that for simple?
The path is laid out in many shapes and the squid point in different directions so all that you need to do is press the D-pad in the direction the squid is facing. If you come across a bubble or item, then only the action button is necessary.
Now, most musical games would have the squid scrolling across the screen and have you pressing the correct button when they are within a certain range. That would be the challenge but not in this game. Instead, your fish moves forward with the button presses while the items are stationary. So technically, you can press at your own pace and get a perfect score anytime.
With the slight chance that you may commit an error, three lives are given to complete the tune but you’ll still be able to find extra ones along the way. But let me tell you, in no way should you ever find yourself in danger of failing, not even on the hardest setting because the game isn’t really challenging. There is a timer present to make you go faster, though it still feels like7 just an exercise in pressing buttons and working out your thumb.
Now I probably still wouldn’t mind it so much as long as I recognized some of the tunes that were being played, but then, that’s not the case either. I’m sure someone would probably recognize them had they been well versed in music appreciation, but not this fella. So, I didn’t even get a payoff for hitting the buttons correctly. Give me Depeche Mode, give me Kelly Clarkson or at least a bad ringtone version of Milkshake but not this!
So even though you’ll be able to download new song packs on a monthly basis, and some may be holiday-inspired, a musical game with unknown songs and no reward (couldn’t have they included winning a ringtone or two by beating a difficulty level?), Fish ‘N Tunes is probably a musical game you should leave for youngsters.
