Golf Superstars 2008 is a casual golf game that’s made with all levels of golf players in mind. It’s simple, challenging and very easy to enjoy.
There are no real golf superstars in the game but you will find three different players to select from, all of which have varying strengths and weaknesses that can upgraded during gameplay. These are Power, Control and Spin and how you improve them is through gaining experience points each time you make a great shot, complete the hole under par, or land close to the cup. Another way of improving the player is by earning money to purchase special items like clubs, gloves and shoes.
Eight different courses are available to play in decidedly difficult Tournaments but all these really entail is how well you personally do. Sure, you can try your best to come out on top with the cup and most money, but you can also just work on improving your score through the course. The courses all have obstacles that players must look out for, such as water hazards and trees but they are all uniquely themed and located in a Forest, Desert, Mountain, Snowfield and more.
While the game follows authentic rules for players, only six holes per course are played. This actually helps keep the game with a very good pace if you have a short attention span, but is enough to satisfy avid players. I thought it was great and instead of burning me out with seemingly endless courses, I kept coming back for these shortened experiences.
The game has super simple controls wherein you can get by with just selecting a club, direction of your ball’s path, and strength of the shot with a button. For extra effect if you’re so inclined, spin can be added using the keypad, but again, it isn’t necessary. Putting is just as easy with grain indicators included. The only thing that really bugged me is how hitting a tree can happen at any point of your ball’s flight, including when it’s at its highest point.
Golf Superstars 2008 is a very decent golf game that’s accessible to all levels of players. The short courses seem like perfect morsels to pass the time with and the ability to improve your character, purchase new items and continuously strive for a better score add legs to the game. It’s a quirky title that isn’t completely smothered in technicalities, and that works well.
