Imaginationland was one of South Park’s most successful and funny storylines so when word spread that a mobile game based on it would be released, I was horrified. Why? Let’s just say that South Park games haven’t quite hit the mark, especially on mobile. But things can change right? After all, anything is possible in Imaginationland.
The game follows the main plot of the story where Butters ends up being Imaginationland’s savior, though it’s played out a little different here. To save Imaginationland, Butters must collect rainbows scattered throughout more than 60 levels in three areas. He does this by using his imagination to help him fly and bounce around the levels to pick up those said, well-placed rainbows.
To begin, you must first select the trajectory and power of his flight. When he shoots off, he’ll bounce around like a rubber ball, but with the rainbows strategically placed and other obstacles in the way, there’s more that needs to be taken into account. For this, Butters collects Imagination Dust that allows you to redirect his flight/bounce pattern. It is collected in a gauge every time he hits or bounces off of an object. This gives him a shot at grabbing the rainbows and moving around barriers.
When the required amount of rainbows has been collected, you must then direct him to the landing pad and finish the stage. This also presents a few problems however because you’ll need to make sure that there is enough Imagination Dust available to do so, and a countdown timer will push you to move as quickly as possible. It takes some trial and error to complete a level, but there’s enough here to make you want to keep trying, especially for collecting all of the rainbows.
A few special prizes are awarded for playing, one of them for picking up all of the rainbows in the game. The other two require high scores and getting through all of the levels. South Park fans will get a kick out of these, but anyone else picking this game up will be pleased as well.
South Park Imaginationland is probably the best South Park game I’ve played. It’s fun, addictive and has loads of humor. It’s quite lengthy and keeps you thinking, but what I enjoyed the most, as a fan, is that the levels are well thought out and you can see many of the characters that played a part in the episodes. Now, I’ve realized that the developer basically skinned a previous game, Turbo Camels Circus Extreme with South Park, and that’s just fine with me since that too was a fun game. This is one South Park game you should download.
