For some reason or other, zombie shooting games have been quite popular on the iPhone but to this point, none has delivered the blood and gore that is typical of a zombie fest on other media. That's about to change as iZombie Death March has made its debut for iPhone and iPod touch.
You see, iZombie Death March features what the developers are calling “perm a-gore” technology. This turns the playing fields into bloody landscapes filled with body parts, carcasses and blood spatter as you lay waste to endless numbers of flesh-eating monsters. It's certainly not for the squeamish, but I really doubt that anyone without a metal stomach would get this title anyway.
Now most zombie shooters currently found on the iPhone take place in one repetitive area whereas iZombie goes for a variety of settings and circumstances. This is because it works to depict scenes from an actual zombie-movie experience by narrating the occurrences through a series of six levels. The levels include shooting oncoming monsters, protecting others, finding yourself in dimly lit hallways, fleeing by car, and taking part in a last stand. They all follow the minimalistic storyline nicely.
Each level features a different weapon to use and also gives you the chance to select from three difficulties. You are given the freedom to select any one you want but an extra difficulty is available by clearing the third toughest. If you so happen to beat the level on the fourth difficulty setting, you can unlock a special option to that level, be it a new weapon or skill.
Playing the game is actually quite simple since you only need to tap the screen where you want your weapon's fire to go. Tap on a zombie and your shot hits it. There is no need (and no way) to move your character though in some levels the game implements lighting effects to make it tougher. That's because you can only see what is illuminated in front of you and must tilt the phone to move the light around. This creates some great atmospheric tension in the game.
iZombie Death March also includes an eerie soundtrack to go along with the gore fest but unfortunately the game is a bit short. With only six levels, unless you plan on taking the challenge of the nightmare difficulty to unlock some specials, there really isn't much more to keep you hooked. The gore and lighting effects are great, and that alone makes the $1.99 fee acceptable.
