Miner 2049er was first introduced back in 1983 and told the tale of Bounty Bob hot on the trail of a dangerous desperado seeking refuge in an abandoned uranium mine.   Loaded with hazardous radioactive waste, deadly mutant organisms, and lots of dangers, the mine itself proved to be more daunting than the villain.

For those who are unfamiliar with the game, Bob must complete each stage by stepping on every inch of the area to change its color, this includes all ledges.  All over there are ladders to scale, chutes to slide down and elevators to use, but radioactive creatures abound as well.  Bob can either avoid these or eliminate them by grabbing some mining gear which turns them vulnerable, just like the ghosts in Pac-Man.  There is one more danger to be aware of however, and that is time itself because a countdown clock adds pressure to finish quickly.

The game is a complete replica of the original in Classic mode.  With its pixilated illustrations and solid colors, there’s no mistaking that it wasn’t born out of the 80’s.  As is becoming common however, the game also sports a Modern mode that updates the look and game play of the original, but stays true to the same game mechanics.

In this modern version, the stages are all new and include even more enemies and perils like moving platforms and acid rain.  This also means new mechanisms to use like utility hoists and transporters.  Best of all, every aspect is controlled with just the D-pad making it very friendly for all users.

In each mode of Miner 2049er, there are 10 stages to clear that get harder and more involving so it becomes necessary to involve more tactics.  If you happen to fail and lose all three lives, you must start from the beginning once again and therefore should be careful in not committing careless mistakes.  The game still remains as fun and challenging as ever, even though it isn’t quite as long, but it certainly is one that feels very good for mobile.  It’s a nice bridge between old and new, and should please gamers of all ages.
