Nokia has finally unveiled what was previously only known as Project White Rock, a super secret game for the new N-Gage platform that has been in development for over two years. Now officially named as Reset Generation, it is revealed as the world’s first videogame about videogames.
At first glance it’s a highly original take on the puzzle genre that’s quite popular on mobile but when picked up and played, it’s clearly something so much more. The most basic premise is like Capture the Flag, but in this case the flag is a princess and instead of running around hiding FPS style, you lay groups of blocks onto the playfield to create a path for your hero to bring the enemy’s princess back to your castle.
The game is turn-based and consists of rounds with the following action sequences: First, opposing players position the placement of the first block shape to fall on the field, hopefully extending a path to the enemy’s castle. This is done simultaneously. Players then move their hero to a desired location. At that time, the castle is allowed two cannon shots for a variety of options. They can be used to blow up the enemy’s path to your castle, damage an enemy directly, or land on power-ups that are scattered about the playing field to use. If these special items are captured, they can then be used at that time and the sequence starts again.
Ultimately, it turns into a heavily strategic battle that sees players fighting to place blocks in the same space, struggling to nab the princess while saving their own, and trying to create block combos of five or more to gain strength over the adversary.
Aside from the Single Player mode, up to four players can participate using separate handsets, but the game also features an Online mode where even PC users can take part in the scrums. This Online mode is even much more profound and expands many of the features that were familiar in the old N-Gage Arena.
What really makes the Reset Generation such a gamer’s game however is not just the title itself, but the entire atmosphere. The 10 selectable heroes are all inspired by videogame greats and you’ll recognize many similarities such as Plumber, Dr. Lovebomber, Level 50 Elf and others. Additionally, audio and video are created on purpose to strike directly as tribute to the games of old, including the “Engrish” used by Ninja. It’s hilarious all the way around.
While the veil has been lifted on Reset Generation, the game still won’t be available until the later this Summer.
