Robotech: The New Generation marks the return of the classic anime saga to gaming.  Based off of The New Generation series, this title is played as a conventional shooter where players jump into the cockpit of a Veritech fighter to save the Earth from the Invid invasion.

Three defenders have decided to take the battle straight to them and you can choose to control any one of these fighters, each with its own Alpha and Battloid mode.   There are over 20 lengthy levels in six distinct areas filled with enemies, power-ups and Boss battles, and know that this is a fast-action shooter, one that keeps your attention on the handset, so make sure that you’ll have no distractions.

As you fly through the levels, the ship automatically fires so that you can solely concentrate on maneuvering to shoot down enemies, pick up power-ups and avoid attacks. To transform into the Battloid, you must pick up vials to fill up a transformation gauge, however, it need not be full in order to use.  As long as you have any amount in the gauge, the Battloid can be used, but since your offensive and defensive capabilities increase when in this mode, it would be smart to save as much of the gauge as possible for when in Boss battles.  Other power-ups include extra health, upgraded weapons, shields and extra ships.

The storyline is told through a series of cut-scenes that have the unique Robotech look and feel and the game play itself captures the essence of the brand for fans with the use of illustrations taken directly from the anime.  In fact, if you love the cut-scenes, after you finish the game, Memories are unlocked to let you view all of them.  (Also unlocked is a much harder Extreme difficulty mode.)  In general, the game looks great with different levels of scrolling and lots of images on the screen without slowdown, and the music also nicely permeates throughout the entire game.

As a whole, Robotech: The New Generation is a pretty good shooter derived from the series that manages to blend both storyline and action well.  Non-Robotech fans should enjoy the fast-paced action and responsive controls that are expected from a shooter, but those who live and breathe Robotech will find that the game remains as true as possible to the source material, and therefore should be well pleased by it.
