Rock ‘n Roll tells the tale of two friends from prehistoric times where one is on a quest to save the other from an evil Sky Spirit. I’ll admit that the story is kind of hokey, as is the case with a good percentage of casual titles such as these, but in the end, it’s all about the game play and there’s a uniqueness here that makes it interesting.
So the story continues that Roll must free his friend Rock by finding all of the musical notes that the Sky Spirit has hidden in a series of mazes, therefore your aim is to guide Roll safely through to find and collect these. You won’t be controlling Roll however, instead, you control the maze by rotating rotate it left or right. This places you squarely in command of the environment so as to securely maneuver him through paths and around many dangers. It’s an interesting choice, one that works well for this game.
Now, you’ve probably haven’t put two and two together yet, but I’m sure you’re wondering why the name Rock ‘n Roll and why the musical notes. That’s because there’s also a musical element to the game. Each location harbors a specific rock ‘n roll tune during play and as you collect musical notes to rescue Rock, a larger set of five notes appears at the top of the screen. As they are filled and completed by collecting the smaller notes, a different section of the tune playing is added on. Once all of the large notes have been filled, the level is complete and the whole tune plays. This feature serves more as a bullet point to the game, but it is a neat little touch.
As the game progresses, the mazes become much more complex and can literally have you running around in circles trying to find all of the notes. Thank goodness there is no timer, but there’s still the possibility of losing your turn by getting hit from the different dangers. If you do want a timed experience, you can check out the Rock the Clock mode. This mode challenges you to get to the exit of the maze before time runs out. As you clear levels in the story mode, they become available here.
Besides the nice use of music, Rock ‘n Roll also sports decent visuals but more impressive is the way in which the game runs. It is very smooth and fast with good physics, so it doesn’t get bogged down even on underpowered handsets. Nevertheless, game play is still king and while it doesn’t offer the satisfaction levels of similar titles like SolaRola or Magnetic Joe, there’s still some uniqueness here that you might want to look at if you enjoyed those two titles.
