It’s hard to believe that Space Invaders first captivated a gaming audience almost 30 years ago.  That’s crazy, and yet here we are still talking about it since it’s also available on mobile phones.  Actually, it’s been available for quite some time now in different forms, but today we’re taking a look at the newest version, which really isn’t much different than what we’ve already seen.

In Space Invaders, the aim is to destroy an invading force of aliens with your cannon before they reach Earth.  By moving your cannon left or right, you can shoot down endless waves of the marching enemies while seeking shelter under the four protective shields.  Eventually, these shields will be destroyed by fire or the alien descent.  To make matters a little more trying, the aliens will quicken their pace as you eliminate more of them. The flying saucer also makes an appearance, and if you shoot it down, extra points are scored.

Aside from playing just like the original, you can also give yourself a slight advantage by going to the Options menu and setting the number of cannons to start with and the minimum score needed to gain more. True die-hards won’t care about this, but if you want to post your score on the leaderboards, you might as well use it.

The sound is clear and practically on target with the original, however, the “alien march” sound effect is missing. Who can forget how the sound effect marked each alien step, getting closer and closer until it had reached its frantic pace? The tension of clearing each alien wave still remains, but without that particular sound effect, some of the anxiety factor is lost.

This newest version of Space Invaders for mobile reflects the original in its truest form, so don’t expect any extra modes or special updates like many classics are currently receiving.  It’s a bit of a bummer, but if you want something like this you might want to get a hold of the 3D version of Space Invaders.  Still, if all you want is the original in the palm of your hands, here you go.
