Super Action Hero is the latest award-winning import from Korea that features stick figures, one-thumb controls and lots of crazy action. If you’re familiar with games like NOM and Stick Fighter Fury, chances are you’ll dig this title.
The aim of the game is to lead your stick figure hero on his quest through trial and tribulation with hopes of becoming the Super Action Hero. How he does this is by taking on challenges that essentially play out as mini-games, and as he scores victories, gains points to move up the ranks. But points aren’t the only thing he’s after however, because hero masks also do their part in aiding him and wearing these bestow different strengths and abilities that are needed to be successful in the challenges.
The hero masks are also unlocked using the point system and there are 32 in all to collect, each one stranger looking than the other but quite effective in its powers. These can be changed at any time prior to taking on a challenge, since they’ll remain in your closet, so the good thing is that you can try a mini-game, and if you flunk out, you can always try a different mask.
There are nine different types of mini-games with different objectives such as rescuing hostages, collecting stars, smashing walls and straight-out kicking butt. Most of them do involve some sort of fighting during the level, but also require you to reach a goal number in the action (i.e. collect 10 stars, beat 10 enemies, etc…) in order to complete it successfully. If you don’t, you still gain points depending on how much you’ve improved over your previous score. This too means that in order to unlock more masks and reach the Super Action Hero title you’ll have to replay the levels, with more difficult requirements and enemies of course.
Super Action Hero is filled with fighting combos to give even the most ardent street fighter plenty of moves to perform. It also has an online component for leaderboard rankings, in-game message boards and the ability to win special masks. It’s a peculiar title, one that will resonate with fans of the game style, but others who also enjoy playing mini-game collections shouldn’t hesitate to give it a shot either.
