You’re probably asking yourself, why, after all this time, are we finally getting around to doing a review on Tetris? The answer to that is, quite frankly, was there ever any real need for it? Probably just about everyone knows and has played the game, so we would only be preaching to the choir. That however isn’t entirely the only reason either because what we have here is the new Tetris, the roll-out of which will replace the version currently offered by wireless carriers.
Before you go ranting and screaming as to how this game shouldn’t be touched at all, let it be known that it hasn’t. The classic game is still here, except that new playing variations have been added to give you more bang for your buck, the most outstanding of which is online Multiplayer. Of course, the game has also received a shiny new graphical update to give it that 21st century look, but it really is all about the new play schemes.
Most single players can jump directly into the Marathon version of the title which is Tetris at its truest form. In Ultra, the objective is to score as many points as possible within two minutes and in 40 Lines, you must attempt to clear these in the fastest time possible. Versus is a demanding attack mode where players send two or more cleared lines over to the CPU opponent’s screen, or vice versa. In Clash, both player and CPU participate on the same matrix and race against each other for a target score.
That about sums up the menu for single players, and if you hope to partake in going at it against friends, the Pass n’ Play mode will service up to four players in a Challenge, where the objective is to reach the highest score given the same number of Tetriminos. All is fine and dandy but you forget that there’s still the online Multiplayer mode to go through.
By going online, you can challenge other Tetris players live in head-to-head matches, even if they are on different carriers. The variations of Tetris that you can play here are Versus, Clash and Challenge, and while you can partake in them at any time, by creating a User ID you gain access to a more robust experience including chat, leaderboards, customized encounters and other community features. The action here is quick, tense and a barrel of fun if you’re into this sort of thing.
