The Mighty Troglodytes is an upstart mobile developer based in Alsace France. It is led by three gentlemen who have had a common passion for video games and mobile technology. After almost a year in existence, their first game has been completed and readied for launch. It is titled Yu: A Warrior Tale.
An adventure game taking place in old China, players assume the role of Yu, a young disciple of a wise old man named Zao. Unbeknownst to Yu, he is the reincarnation of a human god that once ruled the lands and only Zao is aware. After Zao is murdered by an evil lord who is intent on becoming China’s new emperor, Yu seeks vengeance and soon becomes aware of his destiny.
Yu features seven levels within five different environments. Each includes countless enemies and obstacles but Yu has three weapons at his disposal: His trusty sword for close attacks, daggers that can be thrown from a distance and bombs to do maximum damage. Being that he is also a human god, he possesses a magical power that can eliminate all the enemies on-screen. While traveling through the levels, he can crouch, roll and jump to avoid dangers, and also grab power-ups such as extra health and temporary invincibility.
The game illustrations are not super detailed but colors give good depth and the use of parallax scrolling makes for a rich environment. Movement and mechanics could be a little smoother as well and gauging certain jumps or defensive maneuvers aren’t as responsive as we could have hoped for. (Of course, our handset has a lot to do with this since it is lower end.) Game sounds are minimal throughout and have little affect on the game’s appeal.
Yu: A Warrior Tale moves along with an appealing, albeit typical, storyline. The game’s strong points are that there are a number of different mechanics to Yu’s skills and that it isn’t necessarily a walk in the park. It’s a solid first effort from the developer and like most other mobile games, it’s probably better experienced on handsets with greater gaming capabilities.
